Trip StyleWinter Adventure

Time of yearDecember - April

Experience a real winter fairytale in the Russian Far East.

A winter wilderness adventure like no other! This Kamchatka winter tour is your chance to visit one of the most remote and scenically stunning destinations on Earth – the Kamchatka Peninsula, an ancient volcanic region on the edge of the Pacific Rim of Fire. There are no roads or railways from Kamchatka to the rest of the world – the only practical way in is by air. One of the final frontiers of winter sports travel, unspoiled by commercial tourism, Kamchatka offers pristine mountain ski slopes, abundant wildlife and rugged natural scenery.

Kamchatka winter tour highlights:

  • Embark on a thrilling guided snowmobile safari to Three Brothers Rock, a stunning viewpoint on a spectacular stretch of the North Pacific coastline.
  • Ride a Snowcat (an enclosed vehicle with tracks designed to power through snow) across the foothills of the Avacha volcano to Camel Mount, a viewpoint commanding breathtaking panoramas of Kamchatka’s volcanic mountain ranges.
  • Husky dog sledding: Visit a winter camp inhabited by the semi-nomadic Koryak people. Get acquainted with a traditional form of winter transport – the husky dog sled, and try your hand at ‘mushing’ the excitable pups through the powder-soft winter snow.

On this Russian winter holiday, you’ll visit some of Far Eastern Siberia's most awe-inspiring natural wonders. Across a 7-day tour of Kamchatka, you’ll enjoy an array of sensational winter fun activities. Try out some of the novel transport options local Kamchatkans use for getting around the countryside over the winter season. Carve it up on an exhilarating snowmobile safari from the forest to the ocean shore. Learn the art of ‘mushing’ (dog sledding) with a troop of Siberian Huskies, and take in magical mountain scenery on a leisurely-paced Snowcat ride to the foothills of the active Avacha volcano.

On this tour, you’ll also get a feel for the unique cultural life of the Kamchatkans. Taste fresh Pacific produce at the markets during a guided tour of the capital, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky (population 180,700) and visit an ethnic Koryak campsite where you’ll be swept up by nomadic folk songs and stories from the elder shaman.

You won’t be without your creature comforts on this tour. Your base will be the resort village of Paratunka, where at day's end you'll be able to relax in the hot spring-fed geothermal pool, set against enchantingly misty mountain scenery.

Day 1 Welcome to Kamchatka

Welcome to Kamchatka! You will be met at the airport, before transferring to Paratunka, a health resort zone 30km from the capital of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. Spend the day relaxing in and around the secluded resort. Soak in the stunning geothermal outdoor pool, surrounded by mist, snow and the crisp alpine air.

Day 2 Petropavlovsk city tour

Today we’ll take a city tour of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. Visit the city centre with its historical monuments and Local Lore Museum. Shop at the fish markets and try fresh produce from the pure waters of Kamchatka’s rivers. Buy traditional gifts and native handcrafts to remind you of one of the most beautiful places on the planet.

Day 3 Husky dog sledding and cultural immersion

Kamchatka is home to several ethnic groups, among them the semi-nomadic Koryak. Today we visit a nomad camp belonging to the Koryaks. Listen to traditional Koryak folk songs and sample native dishes. You’ll have the opportunity to purchase handmade crafts. Meanwhile, a shaman will tell stories from the lives of the Koryak ancestors.

We get acquainted with one of Kamchatka’s more unusual forms of winter transport – the husky dog sled! You’ll get a chance to ride your own sled and learn the art of ‘mushing’ with the help of your experienced guide. Later on, we head to the hot springs for a relaxing plunge into the waters surrounded by nature.

Day 4 Snowmobile safari

Snowmobiles are a popular form of personal transport for Kamchatkans in winter. Today we’ll find out for ourselves just how useful (and fun) these machines are on a snowmobile safari to the Three Brothers Rock viewpoint on the shore of the Pacific Ocean.

If you’ve never ridden a snowmobile before, our trusty guides are on hand to give a safety briefing and make sure you’re comfortable with the controls before setting off on your adventure.

Day 5 Avachinsky volcano foothill

There are many ways of getting around Kamchatka and today we’ll be taking a snowcat. Known for their use of grooming snow trails and powering through masses of snow, these truck-sized vehicles will take us across to the Avacha volcano foothill. Here we enjoy a ride to the Camel mount, which offers a beautiful view of the Koryakskiy and Avachinskiy volcanoes.

*Based on the group size the snowcat can be changed to snowmobiles with sledges.

Day 6 Free day or optional activities

Testimonials

Sean WongHonk Kong

The highlights of the trip were Koryaksky and Avachinsky volcanoes!

I enjoy every moment in Kamchatka and the tour and would like to give a big thanks to our tour guide – Katerina. She is very kindly and details to introduces the spots. Russian people are very kind and helpful, they are happy to communicate with us and welcome to use some translation app.

I like the hotel and the quality is good enough, but quite far from the city. Russian food is good and there are a lot of options, but a leak of the English menu.

I am very happy to let you know that I am very satisfied with my trip to Kamchatka!

I only wish to come back some day, for some real heliskiing. I was happy with the hotel even if it wasn’t the one you sent information about. They had a nice hot spring. I was very, very happy with my guide, Katja. We became good friends. It was a fun mix of things and a nice introduction to a fascinating part of the world. Thank you!

A million thanks!

Anna and the 56 Parallel team put together an amazing itinerary encompassing three distinct and very different venues within the Russian Federation; Moscow, Kamchatka, and Saint Petersburg. While the trip required many scheduling variations, every date and time was executed flawlessly by the several drivers and guides assigned to caring for Mark and I during our 10-day journey. Nicolai gave us a condensed (we only had several hours) but comprehensive tour and history of Moscow.

Anna provided superb guiding in Kamchatka making every aspect of our visit there a wonderful adventure. She was a competent, knowledgable leader who lined up perfect assistance from Andre and Vica. After an historical tour of the city by Anna, we went to the snowy hinterlands of the peninsula where Andre and Vica took us by snowmobile and sled to wonderful views and places including a marvelous waterfall and natural hot spring as well as getting close (despite a challenging weather day) to one of three volcanos visited. The woman who owned the camp where we stayed was a great host, making sure that all of her guests were fed hearty meals designated for the outdoor activities we were involved in. We also had picnic lunches of salmon, seaweeds, octopus, and squid; along with breads and cheeses. At least Mark got to sample the various local foods. (I stuck to the cheeses and breads, lol).

We got to rope ski behind the snowmobiles and the rides on the snowmobiles were the best! We got to play on two volcanos, one active, as we rode to both via snowcat. Great fun climbing up and freeriding down on our butts. The last stop on our trip was St. Petersburg where we were met and guided professionally and thoroughly through the sights of the city including the Hermitage and Catherines Palace by Marina and Archie. In spite of some very lengthy flights in between stops, we really covered an amazing amount of territory. We are grateful to everyone associated with 56 Parallel in making this adventure one of the very best ever! A million thanks!
